Re: Virginia preps regarding Phil Robbins
Phil Robbins is a good coach, however when he came to Big Stone Gap he more or less walked into an ideal situation as far as coaching high school football goes:
* Powell Valley had just won their first state championship the year before his arrival.
* A strong feeder (little league) program had already been put into place by those who came before him.
* Powell Valley was by far the largest school in Region D.
* Big Stone Gap was pretty much a hub for business/job opportunities, so the place to live in or near abouts was Big Stone. For the most part as far as Wise County goes, this still holds true to this day. Bottom line - more families in the area = more talent to choose from.
I personally would give the community more credit than they currently are given.
Robbins was a head coach for 12 years before becoming the head coach of Powell Valley:
1971 - 1976 John Battle (15-42-3), 25% winning percentage
1977 - 1982 Christiansburg (32-28-1), 52.4% winning percentage
1983 - 2005 Powell Valley (228-55), 80.5% winning percentage
Again, Phil Robbins is a good coach no doubt. But Big Stone Gap/Powell Valley made Phil Robbins a winner, not the other way around.

Do all you people talking about the great talent pool, ect. know that in the history of Powell Valley highschool they had won a grand spanking total of 1 district title before Phil took over. That's one (1). Ever.

That's due to Powell Valley competing in the same district as Clintwood during their "hay-days". Powell Valley had some very good seasons in the 70's and into the early 80's before Robbins arrival, but just happened to coincide with the Greenwave's best teams in the history of their program. Not many people within the LPD fared well against Clintwood during that timespan, if at all.

Re: Virginia preps regarding Phil Robbins
I've heard enough stories on the man from people that would know to make my own conclusions. He could've been bragging on Giles as much as putting down Haysi. Keep in mind Giles beat the crap out of a Christiansburg team that looked awesome at PV in the jamboree. People think alot of things, but like another poster said him and Spurrier just go ahead and say it...lol
Re: Virginia preps regarding Phil Robbins
Me and Phil are tight, we are homies.
I never played for him after my sophmore year, but I would follow him into Hell with a cigarette lighter.
Re: Virginia preps regarding Phil Robbins
Now, that's a dang good post, there "neutral". You've done your homework.
Tom Turner gets my vote for Football Coach of the Century in Southwest Virginia, heck, in the whole state! He is what every coach should strive to be. You talk about players loving their coach....I believe some of his past and present players would take on a runaway locomotive for him!

If you want your kid to be a good football player send him to Phil Robbins. If you want your kid to be a gracious loser send him to John Crockett

Dude thats messed up pretty funny. Straight up though, if Crockett cant win within the next four years he never will. I think he's been give more than enough chances as it is but with the talent he has on the floor now he should be making trips to the state tournament in a couple years.

Powell Valley football had fielded 25 teams under 4 different coaches before Phil came along..... 1 title to show for it. That's one (1).
Re: Virginia preps regarding Phil Robbins
How many LPD and Region D titles do we have?
Re: Virginia preps regarding Phil Robbins
1 out of what 10-12 aint too bad. They only started state championships in 70, so it is not like they had the opportunity in each of those 25 years. Plus Appy, and Clintwood won about half of those before Phil got there anyway.
Re: Virginia preps regarding Phil Robbins
I wasn't talking about state title, I was talking about district titles. They won one (1). That's one (1) in 25 years before Phil.
